Third seed Flavia Pennetta claimed the last place in the semis during Thursday night. She will now take on Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the final. It is bound to be an exciting affair. But first out on centre court, at noon, is the match between the two unseeded players; Gisela Dulko and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
The Argentine Gisela Dulko, who had a very long match yesterday, will not get to rest much before the semifinals. She has probably worked harder than anyone else in this tournament and has to reload her batteries for another match.
Dulko will looking to get revenge on Martinez Sanchez, who beat her in the Bogotá final earlier this year. In that match Dulko only took five games and there’s no doubt that she will do better today.
The Bogotá title is Martinez Sanchez lone career singles title so far, although she has claimed eight WTA doubles titles. In fact she won both the singles and the doubles in Bogotá, an achievement that she could repeat in Båstad. She is still in the hunt for the doubles title along with compatriot Llagostera Vives.
Martinez Sanchez has a solid volley and sensitive hands and it will surely be a match that will suit the audience.
In the second match Caroline Wozniacki will face Flavia Pennetta for the very first time. So far in the tournament both players have been playing extremely well, and none of them has dropped a set yet.
Pennetta, who has reached an age of 27, just gets better and better each week that passes by. She is a strong baseline player who gives everything every time she is on the court. That’s why she is holding an impressive 15th place in the WTA rankings.
Wozniacki has the same strengths. She refuses to give up, and it seems that she can run for however long it takes. Keeping that in mind, it will surely be an entertaining match with many long rallies from the baseline.
Wozniacki will need all the support she can get from her Danish fans, who have arrived in Båstad in full force. The atmosphere will be incredible during the match.
Something that is pretty special for the Collector Swedish Open Women is that three of the four players who are left in the singles tournament are also in the running for the doubles title. So Flavia Pennetta, Gisela Dulko and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez will get a really busy day. After the single matches it’s time for doubles semifinals as well on the center court.
