Aspelin says farewell in Bastad
One of Sweden’s best doubles player ever, Simon Aspelin is playing his last tournament as a professional player here in Skistar Swedish Open.
During his career he has claimed a Grand Slam victory, a silver medal in the Olympic Games and 12 ATP titles.
The decision to retire has been a growing decision this year. All the travelling has been tough for him the last year.
- I’ve felt it a long time, but I fought and just kept on going. But then you come to a point where you have to decide, says the 37-year-old about the decision.
- I always get a nostalgic feeling coming back here, Simon continues.
- I’ve played here 12-13 times but as long as you play you always want to do well.
His two best memories from his career are the US-Open title and the silver medal in the Olympic Games.
What happens after Bastad?- I don’t know yet. I will have the summer off and then we will see. I would like to work with tennis. One possible option is to combine my knowledge in tennis with my economy education.
Watch Aspelin play Wednesday during the Sunset Tennis, pairing up with Andreas Siljeström in a doubles match against Michael Ryderstedt and Patrik Brydolf.
